There are plenty of different ways that you can lose weight – with there being countless businesses aimed at getting you those washboard abs or whatever outrageous goal you set for yourself – or, if you’re like most, you just want to be a bit healthier.
One popular program that exploded in the past few years is Noom. Some call it the Weight Watchers for millennials, and some call it an anti-diet. But, what is it exactly? In this article, we’ll give a Noom review where I’ll discuss what I love about the product, how it can be improved, and who it’s best suited for.

What is Noom?
Noom is a health and wellness program that’s completely online. However, it isn’t exactly the same as a regular calorie counter app. Noom offers a more personalized experience to create a one-of-a-kind health plan that aims to deliver long-lasting results.
When you register, you’ll have to complete a short questionnaire that’ll kickstart the algorithm into getting a plan that fits your needs. You also get a health coach that will provide dietary info along with some helpful advice and motivation.
How Much Does Noom Cost?
When you sign up with Noom you’re given a plan that should see you complete your health and wellness goals and then you pay upfront for those months. As you can see, the price is around $59 for one month and it goes up from there. Or, you can also get the annual plan for $199 a year.
When it comes to pricing, the yearly option is the most cost-effective. For example, the two-month auto-recurring plan can add up cost-wise. For example, if it takes you over two months to achieve your goal you’ll pay multiple payments of $99 for separate two-months worth of access.
The best way to combat this is to go straight out and pay for the year and take away the risk of having to pay a lot more.
What Research is there around Noom?
There’s been a bit of research over the years about the success of Noom. In 2016, researchers led a study of the effectiveness of Noom. The research examined data from Noom customers who reported their intake at least two times a month for over a 6-month period. There were over 35,000 users tested and 77.8% of Noom users saw a reduction in body weight while they were using the program. The study also found that the more frequently people were to monitor their weight and diet, the better results they got.
A different study, also from 2016, used the program to help with a diabetes prevention program (DPP) to 43 participants who all had prediabetes. At the beginning of the study, every participant was either overweight or obese. The aim was to see how well weight loss would go in the DPP program. By the end, of the 36 participants who completed the study (around 24 weeks), 64% lost more than 5% of their body weight.
It’s also important to know that these studies didn’t compare to a control group or a group trying another diet program.
There’s a lot to like about Noom. Some of the pros you’ll see are:
Noom uses a cool traffic light system: They divide food into green, yellow, and red. And that is based on caloric density. The aim is to eat 30% green foods, 45% yellow foods, and 25% red foods. Your green foods are what you’d expect – veggies, fruits, starchy vegetables, whole grains, and some whole-grain products. Yellow foods, on the other hand, are more calorically dense – whole eggs, some plant-based proteins, and lean meats. Red foods are even denser with calories – nuts, seeds, avocado, full-fat dairy, and whatnot.
An emphasis on habit creating: A cool thing about Noom is the obvious emphasis on psychology and behavior change. This isn’t just an app that tells you ‘what’ to do, ut they teach you at making better decisions. They also focus on getting you to explain your ‘why’ behind the goals. This helps for long-lasting motivation and working towards your real goal (for example, your goal isn’t really losing 10lbs, it’s being able to play with your children, making you a better parent).
Recipes: There’s a lot of yummy looking recipes on the site. If it suits your budget, I’d definitely give some of these a try!
A Noom coach: One of the cooler parts of the program is that you get a coach who can help you stay on task. It’s a great way to keep accountable if that’s usually an issue health-wise.
While there’s a lot to love with Noom, there are still a couple of things that could be improved:
- I took the introduction quiz a bunch of times and gave different answers every time to see what would happen. Unfortunately, the test told me I’d lose 15lbs in the same amount of time regardless if I was young and healthy, or had back pain, or was over seventy years old. To me, this looks like the main factor in your plan is the amount of weight you want to lose – which, while being fair, I expected some variance. However, plenty of users have found the test results have to lead to accurate plans, so there might be more to that.
- There is a lot of tracking involved. From tracking all of your meals to being urged to have daily weigh-ins, Noom-life won’t suit everyone. For example, if you’ve had prior experience with obsessive eating patterns, I’d give Noom a second thought, as it could easily create an obsessive and unhealthy mindset.

Is Noom Worth It?
A lot of this really depends on you. While Noom will give you all the guidance you need to lose weight, it doesn’t buy the food and feed you. So a lot of the results will come down to the effort you put in.
Also, some will depend on how you like to operate. Some people love the idea of having a free sustainability coach to help you through. However, other people would consider that a small piece of hell. So, if you’re more of a lone-wolf when it comes to weight loss, you may not get as much out of the coaching and group work as others.
The same goes for constant logging and tracking, some find it motivating while others find it too much. Those who do go through with the program though seem to do very well.
